Workshop Schedule for 2014

Our workshops are open to the public. Donations are accepted at the apiary site. We invite you to join our Association and become a beekeeper. Our annual membership dues are $20 for the calendar year and you can join at the meeting registration desk or by mail with the membership form on our website.

The workshops are offered at Massaro Far m, 41 Ford Road, Woodbridge, CT 06525. Appropriate attire is required: long trousers and long sleeve shirts. Veils will be available or bring your own bee suit. Participation is limited to 20 per session. Pre-registration is required.

March 22

Program:
Hive Assembly – Features hive assembly techniques, reconditioning old equipment, as well as tutorials on cleaning tools, hive bodies, and plastic frames. Bring your old and new equipment so you can work on it under our guidance. Weather and time permitting, we will exam hives in our apiary and demonstrate best practices for a strong spring.

Program:
Package Installation – Sessions include an instructional “live package” installation for new beekeepers, and spring hive inspections. There will also be a demonstration of both the sugar roll and alcohol wash methods of mite detection/management. This hands-on workshop should be of great interest to new beekeepers.

Summer Hive Management – Sessions will help develop basic beekeeping skills and will include several hive openings and inspections with discussions on management techniques to guide through the summer months.

Fall Preparation – Hands-on sessions in best practices for fall hive management. Includes a close look at several hives to assess condition, feeding options, mite detection and control techniques.

Program:
Winter Preparation – A walk through on closing up the hives at the apiary. Instruction on how to prevent mouse damage, apply appropriate hive ventilation and last-minute feeding techniques.
